A BEAUTY queen who wasted a week of police time after lying about being robbed has escaped a jail sentence.
Alicia Akinlami, who was named Miss West Lothian in December, made up the story after losing her £500 mobile phone at a party.
The 18-year-old claimed she had been assaulted and robbed of her jacket, the phone and a bag because she was scared to tell her mum she’d got drunk with her boyfriend.
Detectives spent a week viewing CCTV footage and questioning witnesses – including the boyfriend and the taxi driver who’d driven her home – before Akinlami admitted her lies.
She was slapped with a £500 fine at Livingston Sheriff Court today by a sheriff who warned he knew of at least four other judges who would have sent her to prison.
Sheriff Eric Brown said: “The CID officers who are engaged in the most serious of crimes spent the best part of a week investigating something you made up. I’ve known situations where other sheriffs would have little hesitation in sending you to prison.”
The teenager was facing prosecution when she was crowned Miss West Lothian.
But organisers of the beauty contest said today they would stick by their winner.
A spokesman said: “It looks like one of these situations that has just escalated out of proportion, and as far as Miss West Lothian is concerned, we will give Alicia our full support.”
