AN Edinburgh bin lorry driver who suffered a suspected heart attack at the wheel and swerved into crash barriers is still in a “serious condition”, police have revealed.
The Boxing Day incident came just after the anniversary of the Glasgow bin lorry tragedy, when six Christmas shoppers were killed.
It is thought the driver in the latest crash fell ill before swerving into a central reservation barrier on the A720 Edinburgh bypass near Lothianburn junction.
No one was injured and the city council-employed driver, believed to be in his 50s, is undergoing treatment at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
Police are investigating the crash, which happened at around 12.45pm on Saturday.
The driver was given first aid until paramedics arrived.
According to city council sources, the driver’s crewmate has not returned to work since the accident.
The source also said it was fortunate the incident happened at lunch-time on Boxing Day, when traffic was light.
