AN old primary school has been badly damaged after a blaze.
The roof of the former Hopefield Primary School, in Rosewell Road, Bonnyrigg, caught fire at around 10.15pm on Sunday night.
A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted to the fire at 10.15pm. It initially came in as an automatic fire alarm but by the time we had arrived we had received several calls warning us the building was on fire.
“Firefighters were faced with a well-developed fire when they arrived and called for extra support.
“Thirty-two firefighters used five hoses and one high-pressure hose but the school was quite severely damaged.”
Police are appealing for information regarding this incident.
Inspector Caroline Mackay said: “This fire has caused extensive damage to the building and will most probably result in its demolition.
“The cause of the fire is still to be established and an initial investigation by SFRS will be undertaken today.
“Anyone with information, or anyone who was in the vicinity of Hopefield Primary School last night, is asked to contact police immediately.”
Those with information regarding this incident are asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
