A LEITH bar was evacuated and a section of road cordoned off as army bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion on an envelope - only to discover all it contained was paper.

Police were called to the Leith Beer Company at the Shore at around 8.30pm after reports of a suspicious package.

The building was evacuated and bus services and traffic were diverted.

Officers taped off the area between the Malt and Hops pub and Cafe Truva and told householders looking out their windows in the area by Burgess Street and Waters Close to step further back into their rooms while the bomb disposal squad carried out a controlled explosion.

Police later said the package had contained paper and there was no risk to the public.

A spokesman said: “Enquiries into the full circumstances surrounding this incident are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to come forward immediately.”
