ONE of Edinburgh’s best-known butchers has pleaded guilty to downloading child pornography while inside the premises of the shop.

Jonathan Crombie, of the renowned Broughton Street butchers Crombies, admitted downloading the illegal images at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last month and is set to be sentenced on May 20.

The 45-year-old was reportedly caught as part a police operation to trace and apprehend users of child pornography.

Officers are understood to have traced an IP address used to download indecent images to the shop.

The shock news comes just one week after Crombie hit the headlines when his famous shop won the specialist burger category at the prestigious Q Guild BBQ Competition grand final, staged at the Weber Grill Academy in Oxford.

Today, a spokesman for Crombies said “effective action” had been taken but it was unclear whether the shamed butcher would keep his job.

He said: “We deeply regret the actions of this individual and apologise to any of our customers who may have been upset by the court proceedings.

“The management have taken effective action to deal with this incident which we can confirm was restricted to this one individual.

“Crombies of Edinburgh has traded successfully as a proud family-run firm for nearly 60 years without any previous flaw on its reputation.

“We now wish to put this matter behind us and to concentrate on ensuring Crombies of Edinburgh continues trading as a strong business for our 20-strong workforce and that we continue to provide the best possible service and products to our customers.”

Crombies was launched in 1955 by Alex – Jonathan Crombie’s grandfather – and has since won a string of awards including Scotland’s Best Butcher’s Beef Sausage. When Alex died in 1962, son Sandy took over control of the shop. He was joined by Jonathan Crombie in 1986.

The firm was then specially equipped with new production apparatus and grew to become synonymous with quality, garnering an international reputation for its products.

Crombies is promoted on the VisitScotland website and has the largest range of sausages in the country. Its products are served in top restaurants across the Capital and Scotland.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Courts said: “Jonathan Crombie was charged with downloading indecent images of children and pled guilty at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on April 8, 2014. Sentence was deferred until May 20, 2014.”
