Chris Evans had Social Bite staff in stitches when he filmed a Christmas message for the not-for-profit sandwich chain’s Christmas campaign.

The Top Gear presenter is encouraging people to donate a fiver towards the Christmas campaign which will help feed homeless people in Scotland and refugees across Europe.

Hollywood star George Clooney and First Minister Nicola launched the campaign on Monday – raising over £200,000 in just two days.

And with his typically cheeky sense of humour, the TV personality took a pop at the sandwich shop’s lunchtime competitors.

Chris said: “I’m going to pay a £5 note forward to buy a homeless person Christmas lunch. You can do too if you go to any Social Bite shop as opposed to those other shops. You know those ones with foreign names owned by American conglomerates that actually just keep the money for themselves. This place doesn’t. All the profits go towards helping homeless people and they are staffed 25 per cent by homeless people.”

Other high-profile pledges coming from Olympic legend Sir Chris Hoy, Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, comedian Rob Brydon, broadcaster Chris Evans, and Scotland football manager Gordon Strachan.

Social Bite hope to recreate the success of the 2014 Christmas campaign which raised enough to provide meals for Scotland’s homeless all year round.

A page has been set up on deals and events website itison.com where people can pay £5 to buy a homeless person Christmas dinner, and/or contribute towards a convoy of Social Bite vans which is leaving on 26 December with food and winter essentials to refugee camps in Calais, the Serbia/Croatia border, and Lesbos.
