City churches to congregate after worshippers decide on merger

TWO of Edinburgh's best-known churches will merge to form one congregation from 1 January.

St Andrew's & St George's in George Street and St George's West in Shandwick Place will unite after members of both churches voted for the move.

The new congregation will be known as St Andrew's & St George's West.

For the first six months, services will be held month about in each building, starting at Shandwick Place in January.

The Rev Russell McLarty, interim minister at St Andrew's & St George's, will act as interim minister of the united congregation while the changes take place and they begin the process of calling a new minister.

As well as a place of worship, St George's West is now a Fringe venue.

A service to mark the merger will take place on 24 January.
