THE Capital has been ranked the least affordable area in Scotland to own a home, according to new figures from the Bank of Scotland.

A fall in house prices and reduced mortgage rates has also meant buying a home has become more affordable right across Scotland.

The affordability review showed that in the second quarter of 2011, typical mortgage payments for a new borrower amounted to 22 per cent of their average disposable income – down from the peak figure of 38 per cent in 2007. The least affordable area was Edinburgh, where 29 per cent of average earnings went on mortgage.
