THE city council is in the running for the prize of the UK's best local authority.
It has made it on to a shortlist of ten councils that will vie for the title, being awarded by the Association for Public Service Excellence.
It made the shortlist after four different areas of the council went through for the individual APSE awards.
Edinburgh services are in the running for 'best employee and equality initiative', 'best public/public partnership working', 'best public/voluntary partnership working' and 'best information and communication technology initiative'.
City leader Jenny Dawe said: "Our staff provide excellent services even during these difficult times. To be shortlisted is fitting recognition."
John Stevenson, president of the Edinburgh branch of Unison, said: "It is those on the ground that are still doing such a good job, which is why it is surprising that they want these services to be sold off."
