AN investigation is underway into claims a bogus police officer may be operating in East Lothian.

It follows an incident when a driver stopped after seeing a flashing blue light behind him near Haddington Golf Club.

After he pulled over on the quiet road at night a man, claiming to be a police officer, approached his car and asked him to get out.

The driver refused to do so after the man failed to produce ID verifying he was a police officer.

The bogus policeman tried to open the door of the driver’s car but found it locked.

As the man, dressed in a dark blue top with white flashes, turned away the driver who had stopped sped off and reported the incident to Haddington police station.

Today a police spokesperson confirmed they were investigating the incident.

“Inquiries are still ongoing but anyone who recognises the description of a silver Citreon acting suspiciously is asked to contact police on 1O1.

Genuine police officer are required to produce a warrant card card and ID when asked.
