A 13-year-old boy has been charged after dogs were spotted chasing hares.

The incident took place at around 4.30pm on Friday when a group of boys were seen in fields to the east of Dalkeith with two lurcher-type dogs.

Police said the 13-year-old would be referred to the Children’s Reporter and stressed that officers were still investigating the matter.

Sergeant Stuart Aitchison, of Dalkeith Police Station, said: “We recognise the impact that hare coursing has on rural communities and remain committed to investigating all reports of this.

“Anyone with information about hare coursing is urged to speak to a local officer, contact Police Scotland on 101 or report anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
