A Pensioner has been assaulted and robbed of her handbag and shopping in the latest of a spate of attacks on old women.

The 82-year-old woman was attacked at around 5.20pm this evening, in a lane adjacent to the Brunton hall in Musselburgh.

She was pushed to the ground and robbed of her handbag and shopping bag.

Police said they were urgently appealing for witnesses who may have seen the suspect in the area.

Detective Sergeant John Fortune said: “This was an appalling assault and robbery, leaving the elderly victim very shaken and sore.”

And there is growing concern about the safety of pensioners in the area, withthis the latest in a string of similar attacks on old women in the Musselburgh area.

The string of bag snatches has prompted police to set up a dedicated investiogation, dubbed Operation Formby.
