Police in West Lothian are appealing for witnesses following a suspicious fire in Bathgate.

The incident happened around 12.25am today at an address in Marmion Road.

A 41-year-old man was sleeping within his property when he was awoken by the smoke alarm and made his way to the front door.

At this time he found a small fire had been lit at the letterbox, which he extinguished before contacting police.

Enquiries are ongoing to trace those responsible and anyone who can assist officers with their investigation is asked to come forward.

Detective Constable Jo McCall said: “Fortunately the occupant was able to extinguish what was only a small fire.

“However, had he not been awoken by the smoke alarm then this could have been a far more serious incident.

“Anyone who remembers seeing any suspicious activity in or around Marmion Road in the early hours of Thursday morning is asked to contact police immediately.”

Those with information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively, the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
