POLICE are hunting a group of thugs who launched an unprovoked attack on a young man who was trying to find a taxi on Leith Walk after a night out.

The victim was left with a deep cut to his face and taken to hospital following the assault at around 1am on Sunday.

Police said the 23-year-old man and his cousin had been in town and were walking east along Leith Walk to find a taxi when they passed the group of three men near the Edinburgh City Youth Hostel on Haddington Place. The victim was struck on the face with an unknown object before the three men made off.

Detective Constable Alison Wyllie said: “This was a random and unprovoked attack, which left the victim with a painful injury to his face that required medical attention.

“We do not have any description of the three males believed to be involved in this incident and so we are keen to hear from members of the public who were also in the area at the time and remember seeing anything suspicious.

“Anyone with information relevant to this investigation is asked to contact police immediately.”

Those with information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
