Edinburgh prison chiefs spent £21,000 on translators over the past three years, it has been revealed.

More than £131,000 has been splashed out on interpreters in jails across Scotland since 2011 - with the amount of languages spoken behind bars doubling.

Barlinnie in Glasgow saw the biggest bill, with £45,000 spent by the prison in communicating with foreign prisoners.

A spokesman for the Scottish Prison Service said: “We have to provide these services when we have prisoners who have linguistic difficulties and the figures reflect that, but we have reduced the amount of money that we are spending.”
