A THUG who attacked and robbed a man after losing all his cash at a casino has been jailed.

Kieran Barnes followed victim James McKell into a city centre graveyard before pouncing on him from behind and stealing cash from him.

Barnes followed Mr McKell through Princes Street Gardens before attacking him in the St Cuthbert’s Churchyard.

He sneaked up on Mr McKell before grabbing at his clothes and stealing £20 from the inside jacket pocket during the incident on September 24.

Following the attack Police Scotland launched a manhunt for 26-year-old Barnes and his accomplice and CCTV images of the pair were released.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court was told Barnes was picked up by police in January this year after the media appeal proved successful in identifying the thug.

The court also heard Barnes, described as a prisoner of Shotts Prison, has since been recalled on licence after he had been released early from a five-year High Court sentence for a similar offence.

Sheriff McGowan jailed Barnes for 12 months for last September’s churchyard attack which will run concurrently to his current sentence.
