A woman has been attacked after beign ambushed whilest walking her dog in Muirhouse.

The incident took place around 10.55pm on Sunday when a 47 year old woman was walking her dog in an alleyway between Muirhouse Place East and Muirhouse Place West.

She saw a large tree branch deliberately obstructing the path, and as she went to lift it out the way felt her hood grabbed from behind, which caused her to fall to the ground.

She struck at the suspect’s face with her dog lead, causing him to run off.

Police are now appealing for any witnesses to come forward who may have information which can assist enquiries.

The suspect is described as white, 6ft 3in tall, slim, short brown hair, big nose, and wearing a black jacket, grey jogging bottoms with a stripe on the outside of the leg.

Detective Constable Richard Johnston said: “While it’s unclear what the motive of the suspect was, we are not ruling out the attack was sexually motivated.

“The male was hit with the dog lead and so there’s a possibility he has an injury or a cut to the face. I’d urge anyone who saw a female dog walker in the area on Sunday evening, or recognises the description of the suspect, to contact police immediately.”

Anyone with any information on this incident should contact Police Scotland on 101.
