Jean and Robert McGuire, from Penicuik, have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

Jean Baird, who came from Craigmillar, and Robert McGuire, from Prestonpans, were married in Edinburgh on April 3, 1954.

Jean first saw her husband-to-be when he was singing A Beggar in Love at a competition in Musselburgh.

Jean recalls: “He was a singer and was singing in the town hall in Musselburgh. I remember he was a lovely singer. I think he won that night.”

The couple, who now live in Penicuik, were later introduced at a dance at Wallyford Miners’ Club.

After their wedding, the couple set up home in Prestonpans, where Robert worked as a miner at the Prestonlinks colliery.

They moved to Penicuik in 1962 when Robert switched to Bilston Glen colliery.

He remained there until he retired as an economy officer.

Jean worked at Stewart’s Whisky Bond at St Leonard’s, Edinburgh.

The couple, who are members of Sacred Heart RC Church, lived in Cuiken Terrace and John Street before moving to their current home in Heinsberg House.

Jean and Robert, a member of Shottstown Miners’ Club, have two children – James, who lives in Ireland, and Catherine, who lives in Bahrain.

They also have seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

And the secret to a long marriage? “Working together. That is how it is,” said Robert.

“We always work together,” said Jean. “And we know what each other is doing.”
