Diehard fans queueing to retrieve their tickets even included Frank Skinner, who ran into the screening saying he was worried he would be late.

Other superfans were careful to be on time with Adam Smith, 20, of Granton, turning up prepared with his own fez and Tardis backpack, after his mum surprised him with tickets for his birthday.

“I’m a massive fan – I’ve got my own website dedicated to Doctor Who,” he said. “I was all upset that I was going to have to watch it on TV, but then the tickets fell out of my birthday card, so I was thrilled.”

Another fan, Sara-Jane McGeachy, 38, was named after one of the Doctor’s assistants.

“It’s non-reserved seats so I’ll be throwing women and small children out the way,” she joked.
