SPECULATION is mounting that next year’s Scottish Open golf tournament will be held in East Lothian.

First Minister Alex Salmond, the chief executive of sponsors Aberdeen Asset Management, Martin Gilbert, and European golf officials visited Gullane earlier this week.

Gullane No. I and the nearby Renaissance Club near Direlton are thought to be in the running to stage the event in 2015.

A spokesman for the Gullane club confirmed the visit which he described as part of the “assessment process” for potential host courses.

It’s expected a decision will be announced on next year’s venue in July when the event is staged in Aberdeen

The tournament attracts some of the world’s leading golfers as it is staged in the run up to The Open Championship.

If either is chosen it would bring considerable economic benefits to the area.
