Heavy rain and gusty winds are expected to batter the Lothians tonight as drivers and last-minute shoppers were warned to take care on the roads.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for rain, with strong to gale force winds forecast from 3pm through into tomorrow.

Snow is possible for higher points such as the Pentland Hills. Midlothian Council was due to have gritters on the roads from 5am this morning, with hail and sleet forecast.

Dan Williams, spokesman for the Met Office, said the conditions were likely to be at their worst for peak-hour traffic.

He said: “Generally winds will be 40 to 50mph at the peak. That will probably coincide with when people are on their way home during the early evening.”

Conditions are forecast to remain wet this weekend, but mild for the time of year.

Bookmaker William Hill has slashed the odds of the Capital getting snow on Christmas Day to 7/2 on the back of colder weather fronts sweeping Britain.
