EDINBURGH’S giant pandas are to enjoy new hammocks as part of an overhaul of their quarters at Edinburgh Zoo.

Bosses have confirmed that they took the opportunity to refurbish Yang Guang and Tian Tian’s “on show” dens while the pair were taken off display to visitors due to the panda pregnancy.

Tian Tian eventually lost the cub she was carrying as Yuang Guang was struck down by a metabolic illness.

The pair are also currently being trained in new behaviours to help with their medical management and veterinary care, the zoo said.

Zoo giant pandas director Iain Valentine said: “While the pandas have been off show we have taken the opportunity to freshen up their on show dens with a new coat of paint, and we have put in hammocks for both pandas. We are looking forward to seeing how both of them react to those.”

Both pandas are now back on public display.
