THE blaze at a car park servicing Edinburgh Airport that destroyed 18 cars was caused by an electrical fault, it has emerged.
Investigators combed the scene for most of yesterday but found no evidence that the fire was started deliberately.
It is now believed that the flames started in one vehicle and then spread quickly to the others cars.
Low Cost Airport Parking, which holds more than 1000 vehicles, is run by Patricia and Jessica Reid.
The sisters described the incident as a “shock” but pledged to look after all the affected customers.
They said they would do their utmost to make sure everyone gets home safely, providing hire cars if necessary.
Company director Patricia said: “It’s such a shock but the fire service and CID have been fantastic. The fire brigade, forensic teams and CID were here all day.
“We have been told by investigators that it is an electrical fault in one of our customer’s cars.”
She added that 18 cars had been damaged, not 21 as originally reported.
Low Cost Airport Parking has managed to contact most of the people affected, though some called themselves after reading about the event on holiday via the Evening News website.
Jessica, also a company director, said the fire started in a Suzuki belonging to a customer they had been unable to contact so far.
She added: “Some had read it on the internet which softened the blow.
“They have been very good about it but they haven’t seen the damage yet.
“Obviously we are trying to get back to normal but it’s been a bit of shock.”
Firefighters were called to the blaze at 1.15 yesterday morning.
It raged for nearly three hours before crews managed to put it out. Firefighters said 12 cars had been alight when they first arrived but the blaze quickly spread because the vehicles were parked so close together.
In its official statement, Low Cost Airport Parking said: “We have been informed by fire investigators that they understand the blaze broke out due to an electrical fault in one of our customer’s vehicles.
“We have been in business for 15 years in Edinburgh.
“As a family-run business we are fully insured so our valued customers are fully protected, unlike many other car parks which are self parking and do not carry insurance.
“Edinburgh Airport has been very helpful and have offered their assistance.”
The car park offers off-area parking just under a mile from the airport, at Newbridge.
