An elderly horse which was trapped for hours in water on an embankment has been freed by firefighters.

The emergency services were called to Raw Holdings in East Calder at 12.15pm on Friday after reports of an animal in distress.

The 36 year old horse is understood to have been trapped for several hours.

After being sedated by a vet, the animal was freed using heavy-lifting farm machinery.

The horse was then left in the care of the vet and its owner.
