KING Kong The Musical is a brand new show, premiering at The Space on Niddry Street.
King Kong * * *
Down on his luck impresario Carl Denham was the man responsible for bringing King Kong to New York... and the ensuing mayhem.
Years on, he attempts to revive his ailing fortunes by producing a musical about the ‘eighth wonder of the world’. But he hasn’t paid the cast in weeks so they’re restless as a potential producer arrives to decide whether or not he will save the show. Packed with promise, the script scampers along with some entertaining songs, including the wonderful Apeing Love. A live band adds verve and sparkle. The set is minimal but functional but lighting and costumes mean the whole thing is drenched in 1940s glamour.
Performances are very capable but overall, it feels under-rehearsed.
