Have your say

There is nothing that makes me feel less patriotic than my inability to drink whisky.

There have been several interventions to turn my taste buds around, but none have managed to prevent the gag reflex every time Satan’s juice sets fire to my oesophagus.

I’ve tried everything – neat, cheap, expensive, a dash of water, even cocktails, but nothing works.

So when Pommery invited me to a preview of their festival offerings and said that this year they’d be adding a whisky strand at the Signet Library, I was dubious about coming out a convert.

Sitting below the architectural porn that is the Signet Library ceiling, I took the first dram to my lips and recoiled on cue. It was bad. Dreading the custom whisky cocktails, I contemplated slipping out back.

Out popped a pretty glass complete with purple flower floating in the liquor. This wolf in sheep’s clothing wasn’t fooling me. There was no way whisky could taste like parma-violets. A suspicious sniff later, I decided to dive in. Sweetie goodness swirled around my gub delighting my senses. It was delicious. A breakthrough. I now drink whisky - a sugary sweet, flower floating version granted, but whisky nonetheless. Patriotic integrity reinstated and my uber girlie persona reaffirmed. The parma violet will be the drink of this year’s festival. Mark my buds.
