DING dong the witch is very much alive. The Evening News can today reveal that should you follow the yellow brick road next Christmas, it will lead you straight to the Playhouse – Wicked, the hit Broadway musical, is coming to the Capital.
The blockbuster stage-show, which has already been seen by more than five million people in the UK since its 2006 UK premiere, is set to fly on to the Playhouse stage for a eight-week season.
A prequel to L Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Wicked tells the untold story of an unlikely friendship between two girls who first meet as sorcery students: the blonde and popular Glinda and a misunderstood green girl named Elphaba.
Their extraordinary adventures in Oz ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda The Good while Elphaba becomes the Wicked Witch of the West.
Jo Beale, general manager of the Playhouse, said, “We are delighted to announce that Wicked will be at The Playhouse next year. This award-winning show is a fantastic production that we know our audience will love.
“This confirms our commitment to continue to bring only the best Broadway shows to Edinburgh.”
The musical will run from November 19 2014 to January 10 2015, with prices ranging from £20 to £75. Tickets go on sale 10am, November 21 from 0844 871 3014
Producer Michael McCabe added: “We are all thrilled that Wicked will be spending Christmas 2014 in such a beautiful and historic venue.
“We’re enormously proud of this new production, which has successfully combined the size, spectacle and technical wizardry of the London show with an intimacy that has made the storytelling more captivating than ever. Edinburgh is well known for having some of the best theatre audiences in the world, so we can’t wait to share such a magical time with them.”
