FORMER Hearts owner Vladimir Romanov has been granted asylum in Russia – ending a bid by Lithuania to extradite him for alleged embezzlement.

Mr Romanov was arrested – and then released – in Lithuania in April after being accused of embezzling Ukio Bankas’ £12 million assets.

He fled to Russia before an international arrest warrant was issued in August.

Moscow has now confirmed that Romanov won’t be sent back to Lithuania to face charges.

Vitas Vasiliauskas, governor of Lithuania’s central bank, told the Baltic News Service (BNS): “[Russia’s] decision came as no surprise to me, as Romanov consistently and purposefully worked in this direction.

“Besides, this gentleman never looked like someone who had the guts to take responsibility for his actions.”
