Spring has sprung which means it is time to dust down those stripes.
I say dust down because it is a trend that rears its head every time the cherry blossom is in full bloom. Now, there is nothing new in nautical – in fact, had Coco Chanel got her way we would be dressed as sailors every day of the week. So to break the monotony of doing stripes the same old way I’m giving you a wardrobe update. Here are three ways to wear stripes for spring 14.
BE A STAR IN STRIPES
The Complete Cheat
One big strip across the body is the perfect elementary way of doing stripes. Get some bright colours, pair them together and fling on some funky trainers to tie it all together. The trainer is having a bit of a renaissance within the fashion set. Think super sharp- dressed women on the commute to work wearing shoes for walking in with their heels in their handbag and you’ll nail the look.
The Updated Parisian
From Mademoiselle Chanel to Monsieur Gaultier, the French have paid homage to a look that is characteristically Parisian for decades. It is an effortless chicness that promotes masculine lines on the female form. The colour palette of cream and navy acts as a relaxant, evoking memories of being beside the sea. Go for wide-legged trousers and an oversized sweater to hark back to Coco’s obsession with androgyny.
The Full On
This is a very British approach to dressing. Go bold for a real statement – teaming trousers and blazer together without breaking up the look by wearing something underneath. There are many differing rules about what you can and can’t do when it comes to wearing stripes. I say forget all of them, if you are going for this kind of vibe be unapologetic in it’s brazenness. As for footwear, a heeled gladiator sandal will mirror that liner look.
