Police in East Lothian are investigating an incident in which bogus workmen conned an elderly Musselburgh woman.

The workmen called at her home in Whitehill Avenue last Thursday and charged a four-figure sum of money for work carried out on her roof.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: “The workmen charged an extortionate fee to carry out work which lasted no more than a few hours.

“It is suspected that they may have called at a number of addresses in the area and police want to hear from anyone who may have received an unsolicited call. At this time, we would advise people who receive an unsolicited call to carry out any type of maintenance work to refuse them access, and contact the police.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 0131 311-3131.
