FIREFIGHTERS battled for over an hour to rescue a horse which pushed its way through a fence and fell into a cesspit full of sewage water.
Crews rushed to the scene of the accident just behind Damhead nursery, Lothianburn, after reports were received shortly before 9am on Sunday.
They said a specially adapted pump was mobilised from Sighthill so firefighters could remove thick sewage water and attach straps to the animal.
The rescue was completed at around 11.15am, although crews remained on scene until after noon to decontaminate suits and equipment.
They said the animal was left “alive and well” and in the care of a vet.
