DOZENS of firefighters launched a salvage mission during a major blaze on Saturday rescuing antique furniture and “ornate decor” from an upmarket townhouse near Stewart’s Melville College.
More than 30 firefighters were tasked with salvaging contents from a second storey property on Ravelston Terrace after a blaze broke out in the boiler cupboard just before midnight on Saturday.
Crews feared the fire, which was well developed and had spread into the plaster walls and roof, might weaken the joists of the building.
Firefighters from almost every station in the city were scrambled to the scene over the course of five hours.
They used six breathing kits, a line of hose reel and deployed a turntable ladder to locate the fire.
Crews left the scene at around 4.40am this morning.
