CCTV footage from Edinburgh Zoo has captured the moment giant panda Yang Guang managed to frighten himself - with a stick of bamboo.

The hilarious video shows the panda swinging on a specially-built hammock while munching away on some bamboo, before another stick falls over, striking him on the rear and causing him to jump.

Yang Guang then goes back to eating as he works out what caused the scare.

Alison Maclean, Team Leader for Giant Pandas and Carnivores, said: “Yang Guang is normally a very peaceful and calm animal, who loves sleeping and eating.

“He had quite a fright though when a stick of bamboo he’d forgotten he’d put aside for later fell and broke the silence.

“Our bear quickly recovered though and happily went back to lazing about and giving himself a good scratch.”
