City of Edinburgh cyclist Katie Archibald was today savouring her new-found status as a European champion and world record holder after marking her first outing in Great Britain colours with victory in the team pursuit at the UEC European Track Championships in Holland.
Archibald forced her way into the squad with a string of fine performances at last month’s British Championships. And, despite lining up alongside several of the stars from the London Olympics, the 19-year-old was unfazed when, having sat out the qualifying ride, she was called up to ride alongside Olympians Laura Trott and Dani King, as well as Elinor Barker.
And the quartet showed their class, riding to gold in a time of 4 minutes 26.556 seconds that eclipsed the world record set earlier in qualification.
Archibald, who had signed her first professional contract earlier in the week – she will join the Madison Boot Out Breast Cancer Team next season – had little time to enjoy that success before returning to the saddle to contest the points race, taking 15th spot behind multi world champion Kirsten Wild of the Netherlands.
