SIX hospital porters were suspended after a nurse allegedly discovered them having an illicit booze session at Edinburgh’s Western General Hospital.
The porters are said to have been drinking vodka, rum and cider when they should have been helping out on the wards. The secret party was reportedly discovered when a nurse went looking for the men to move mattresses.
One source said: “The porters had decided to have a celebratory drink on New Year’s Day, but it was taken too far.
“A half-bottle of vodka was lying empty and only two cans were left from a case of cider. They were also on the Morgan’s Spiced rum.
“Four were caught in the act and two came into the room while the nurse was there.”
NHS Lothian facilities director George Curley confirmed an investigation had been launched into the drinking allegations.
He said: “We take any instances of this nature extremely seriously and as a result six members of staff have been suspended.”
