A backpacker has been told that a three-inch-long leech had been living up her nose for a month.

Daniela Liverani suffered nosebleeds and went to Edinburgh’s Royal Infirmary when she came back from Vietnam.

The 24-year-old thought she had a blood clot but she was rushed into A&E where her nostril was prised open in an agonising procedure the leech was removed with tweezers.

Doctors said it could have eventually worked its way into her brain.
