PATIENTS have been warned to expect long queues at accident and emergency departments over the Christmas period because most GPs’ surgeries will be shut for a prolonged spell.
With Christmas Day on a Thursday, many will be closed right over the weekend – and the same again at New Year.
GP surgeries across the Lothians will close for these eight days across the festive period.
Clinics will be shut from Christmas Day to December 28, and from New Year’s Day to January 4.
An out-of-hours service will provide cover on Christmas Day and Boxing Day and on January 1 and 2, as well as on the Saturdays and Sundays after both Christmas and New Year.
GP surgeries will operate normal hours from 8am to 6pm on Christmas Eve and Hogmanay.
Dr Martin McKechnie, chairman of the College of Emergency Medicine in Scotland, said: “People will, as usual, vote with their feet and turn up at A&E.”
