The Highlander crisps factory in Bathgate is to close with the loss of 28 jobs.

Italian owners Unichips SpA have decided to halt production on July 31 after 26 years.

The plant is being axed following a slump in sales and production will now be centralised in Italy.

It is a further jobs blow for the area following the closure of Hall’s of Broxburn, with the loss of 1700 jobs, and the potential closure of the Muller Wiseman depot in Whitburn, with the loss of a further 116 jobs.

At its peak, Highlander employed 150 people at the plant.

Workers had been warned several months ago that closing the plant was a possibility.

West Lothian Council will help those laid off find new jobs.
