A SHERIFF branded a man “an idiot” for trying to rescue his ex-girlfriend from police – even though he was banned from contacting her.
Steven Kelly’s actions were described as “inexplicable” by Sheriff Susan Craig, who rubbished his lawyer’s claim that he was acting as a Good Samaritan.
She made her comments as she sentenced Kelly, 38, at Livingston Sheriff Court for breaching a court order by approaching Stephanie Craven during the incident outside a nightclub. Kelly, who had just come out of the Twig club in Bathgate, West Lothian, ran towards Miss Caven, who was being held in a bear hug by a policeman.
She was detained for allegedly causing a drunken disturbance after being refused entry to the club.
Kelly, from Livingston, pleaded guilty to committing the offence in the early hours of Sunday, September 1.
He was fined £200, to be paid at a rate of £10 a fortnight from his benefits.
