LEAPING over a fire pit was just one of the obstacles in the Spartan Race in East Lothian at the weekend.

The race, variously dubbed “hell on earth” and “an event of pure, primitive craziness”, featured 25 different challenges for an estimated 3000 participants.

The gruelling course at Winton House estate, near Pencaitland, included many types of terrain, including challenging hills, dense undergrowth and the River Tyne.

Estate owner Sir Francis Ogilvy, the 14th Baronet of Inverquarity and a nephew of the Queen, was one of the runners, who were watched by around 6000 spectators.
