A DRUNK student claimed he got in his car to drive home after a night out because he “noticed a friend placing a hand on his girlfriend’s knee”.
But the explanation did not satisfy a sheriff, who today banned Joseph Baker, 20, from driving for 18 months and fined him £300.
Baker, an accountancy student, pleaded guilty to driving his car in Eastfield while more than twice the drink-drive limit on December 22.
Defence solicitor Euan Grosney told Edinburgh Sheriff Court that Baker had planned to return home to Dunbar Road in Haddington after the alleged incident involving his girlfriend. But Mr Grosney admitted: “It’s not a particularly satisfactory explanation.”
