An absurdist stand-up act has been named the best comedy show of the Edinburgh Fringe - just a year after being named best newcomer.

John Kearns scooped the £10,000 prize at the 34th Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards for his show Shtick, from a shortlist that included an unprecedented three newcomers from the previous year.

Kearns beat fellow 2013 newcomers Liam Williams and Romesh Ranganathan at the awards, which were announced at Edinburgh’s Dovecot Studios.

New York-based comedian Alex Edelman won this year’s best newcomer award for his first Edinburgh show Millennial.
