US singer Kelly Clarkson has dropped in for a beer at Edinburgh’s oldest pub.

Stunned staff at the Sheep Heid in Duddingston said the Since You’ve Been Gone singer visited the pub this afternoon.

She kept a low profile and managed to avoid recognition by most of those around her, staff said - although the star tweeted her location to her 10 million followers.

Staff revealed the star tucked into a plate of “chunky chips”, washed down down with a cappuccino and a beer.

It is not known why the pop star was in Edinburgh as she had no scheduled concert dates in Scotland.

The singer from Burleson, Texas, shot to global stardom after triumphing in the first season of the American Idol TV talent show in 2002. She performed at Capital FM’s Summertime Ball at Wembley over the weekend.

One barmaid said: “No-one seems to have recognised her. I recognised her but didn’t want to say anything.”
