A RESTAURANT reopening under new management after a major refurbishment is set to become a familiar name across Scotland after revealing plans for a major expansion.

La Lanterna, in Hanover Street, has been taken over by Dan Miller, of the North East Sambuca Restaurant group, who wants to take the brand to Glasgow and Perth, as well as open more Capital outlets.

The Italian restaurant – which first opened more than 30 years ago – started serving again yesterday after
undergoing an overhaul.

Mr Miller said he hoped to open 20 branches across the country under his ambitious vision.

He said: “I’ve had an interest in branching out into Scotland for about three years, but it’s been a case of finding the appropriate sites.

“I’m planning to invest in five or six more sites in Edinburgh over the next three to five years, with one already scheduled to open in the next three months. The plan is to grow the La Lanterna brand, with roughly 20 sites across Scotland as a whole.”

Mr Miller said he couldn’t name any locations for new restaurants in the Capital – but refused to rule out taking over existing eateries.

He said: “As with the Hanover Street La Lanterna, my plan would be to keep on staff where possible, and sites built up from scratch would also mean job creation.

“Like with the Sambuca establishments, once an outfit is up and running it will be handed over to dedicated existing staff to manage, giving people working in the
industry an exciting opportunity to further their careers.”

La Lanterna was first opened by Toni and Ciccio Zaino 31 years ago, and put on the market almost a year ago after “mamma” Toni decided the time had come to hang up their aprons.

She said: “Myself and Ciccio wish to thank all of our customers for their continued support throughout our 31 years in business.

“I do so hope the customers will be just as happy with the new look of La Lanterna.”
