AN eleventh-hour bid has been launched to save Haddington Sheriff Court from closure.

Campaigners are calling on new Justice Secretary Michael Matheson to retain court services in the town by introducing the new post of Summary Sheriff in East Lothian.

The court is due to close at the end of January as part of a Scotland-wide rationalisation programme approved by Mr Matheson’s predecessor Kenny MacAskill.

Campaigners say a Summary Sheriff arrangement could be introduced at a lower cost.
