HUNDREDS of homes were left without power for almost two hours last night due to lightning strikes.

Residents in Musselburgh, Tranent and Prestonpans reported power cuts from 6.15pm, with homes in Wallyford and Whitecraig also affected. Electricity was restored by about 8pm.

A ScottishPower spokeswoman said lightning had been responsible for the outages.

Yesterday’s cuts followed a power surge during thunderstorms on Tuesday that also affected Musselburgh and surrounding areas in East Lothian. Musselburgh East and Carberry ward Councillor John Caldwell said the surge had “snookered” his computer.

He said: “I’ve never heard lightning and thunder like this in my life in this area. It was very loud.”
