A DRUG mule from East Lothian has told how he was forced to transport narcotics by the same gang who snared Melissa Reid and Michaella Connolly.
The would-be smuggler said he was pushed into doing the same Majorca-Madrid-Lima drugs run after he fell into debt while in Ibiza in 2011.
Melissa, 19, from Lenzie near Glasgow, and Michaella McCollum Connolly, 20, from Northern Ireland, claim they were ordered at gunpoint to smuggle £1.5 million worth of cocaine out of Peru after being arrested while trying to board a flight from Lima to Spain last week.
The 27-year-old East Lothian man, whose identity has been protected, said: “That was me two years ago. These guys operate from Ibiza the whole year round.
“The henchman is on Melissa’s Facebook page. That’s the guy who told me I would have to do the run to Peru.”
And he added: “What happened to Melissa could have been me and my friend standing there.
“I feel so sorry for the girls because I know what they’ve been through.”
