A low-flying military jet taking part in an evening training exercise sparked confusion amongst residents.

The noise of the fly-past at just before 10pm saw people taking to social media to find out what was happening, with some asking if it was a possible military exercise or even Russian jets racing over UK airspace.

Many compared it to the noise of the frequent fly-pasts which happen during the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

In fact Air Traffic Controllers confirmed it was a Royal Air Force Typhoon aircraft carrying out what was described as a ‘routine military familiarisation’ flight over the city.

Sources said the training exercise, believed to have taken off from Lossiemouth, had been scheduled to take place at 8pm, but had been delayed
