A PENSIONER and his dog have died after being hit by a van near Penicuik.

Emergency services were alerted to the fatal collision on the A702 near to the Flotterstone Inn at around 6pm on Tuesday.

The 66-year-old man had been walking his dog to the west of the Midlothian town, and heading north towards Edinburgh, when he stepped out on to the northbound carriageway.

He was then hit by a red Mercedes Sprinter van.

The Scottish Ambulance Service attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene and next of kin have been informed.

It is understood that the driver of the van, who stopped at the scene, was unhurt in the accident.

The roadway was closed for around five hours while collision investigations were carried out.

Police are now appealing to anyone who was travelling in the area around the time of the incident and who remembers seeing the van or victim to get in touch.

Sergeant Andrew Gibb of Police Scotland said: “Our inquiries into the full circumstances of this incident are ongoing and I am keen to hear from anyone who witnessed this incident.”

Those with information are asked to contact police on 101.

Police have confirmed that no-one has been arrested or charged with an offence at this stage of their investigation.
