A MAN is to stand trial accused of punching a one-month-old baby.

Russell Griffin has denied striking the tiny tot during an incident in a charity shop in Musselburgh, East Lothian, in October 2012.

Mr Griffin, 55, failed to appear at Haddington Sheriff Court, but his solicitor lodged a plea of not guilty on his behalf to the charge of punching the four-week-old girl at the Hearing Dogs for the Deaf charity shop.

Depute fiscal Brent Bissett told the court the Crown was ready for trial and revealed there would be four civilian witnesses and one police officer ready to testify in the case.

Mr Griffin, from Musselburgh, will return to court to face trial next month.
